About

I’m a partner at Pine Works, where I help organizations plan and deliver complex, content-rich digital platforms. With over 20 years of experience in web development, I bring a calm, strategic mindset to projects that require both big-picture thinking and technical depth.

At Pine Works, Ryan is one of the software partners, working on technical architecture, and platform planning—ensuring that every solution is scalable, sustainable, and built to last.

I’ve worked with clients like Stanford University, Ben & Jerry’s, and Papa John’s, guiding teams through re-platforms, content management system migrations, and digital transformations.

Prior to Pine Works, I led technology at a national higher-ed organization, served as VP Technology at Happy Cog, and founded CraftQuest, an online learning platform for developers building with Craft CMS and modern web development tools. CraftQuest has been running since 2018 as a bootstrapped, profitable subscription training platform serving web developers across the world.

I started my technology education work as the author of two books: The Business Podcasting Book (Focal Press, 2007) and ExpressionEngine 2: A Quick-Start Guide (Pragmatic Bookshelf, 2010).

As part of my technology training work, I created and taught technical courses to internal teams at NASA, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, University of Chicago, and UMass Boston.

I received a Certificate for German as Foreign Language from Goethe-Institut e.V., a B.S. in German Studies from Middle Tennessee State University and an M.A. in German Studies from the great University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Go Heels.

Descending on a trail at the Sky Island 25k race. September 2024

Oh, and I’m a runner. I started running in 2015, and just crossed 11 years running 3-5 times per week almost every week (barring illness, injury, surgery or lazy).

I’ve completed the following race distances:

  • 5k
  • 10k
  • Half Marathon (13.1 miles)
  • 25k
  • Marathon (26.2 miles)
  • 50k

Running is a large part of my identity at this point. I hope I have many, many years of running ahead of me.
